Questo strano flipper è stato scoperto da un nostro amico, che non è abbastanza pazzo da tentare un restauro. E' rimasto per anni nel magazzino di un noleggiatore, ma ora è al sicuro nelle nostre mani!
This weird pinball machine has been discovered by a friend of us, not crazy enough to attempt a restoration. It has been sitting for years in an operator's warehouse, but now it is safe in our hands!
Sappiamo poco sulla B.E.M., una piccola azienda che produceva giochi da sala negli anni settanta. La maggior parte delle informazioni vengono dal depliant di un'altra macchina, e da qualche vecchia pubbilicità sulla rivista di settore "Automat". Quello che è certo, è che la domanda di flipper nell'Italia degli anni settanta era veramente alta. Oltre alle macchine importate dagli stati uniti, c'erano flipper originali prodotti da ditte come Zaccaria o Nordamatic, copie di flipper americani eseguite da ditte più piccole, e altri flipper provenienti da ditte ancora più piccole come questa.
Little is known about B.E.M., a small italian company that made arcade machines in the seventies. Most information come from a flyer of another machine and some old adverts on the italian operator's magazine "Automat". What is sure, is that the demand for pinball machines in Italy during the 70s was really very high. In addition to the machines imported from the United States, there were original pinballs from italian manufacturers like Zaccaria or Nordamatic, copies of american pinballs from smaller companies, and more pins from even smaller companies like this.

Le caratteristiche principali - main features
La testata - The head
Il Sun's Cruise e' dotato di una testata molto piccola: circa 49x37 cm. La testa può essere rimossa e collocata all'interno di uno scompartimento del mobile, che è accessibile tramite uno sportello posto sul fondo. Questa invenzione fu chiamata "Marsupium System" (!) dal progettista, e c'è addirittura un logo che la rappresenta stampato sul legno! La testa si apre su di un lato, e un'etichetta all'interno rivela che la macchina fu costruita nel 1978. Sebbene la piccola testa faccia assomigliare questa macchina ad un modello giocattolo o da casa, questo è un vero flipper a tutti gli effetti!
Sun's Cruise comes with a very small head: about 49x37 cm. The head can be removed and stored inside a compartment in the cabinet, that is accessible through a door located in the bottom. This feature was called "Marsupium System" (!) by the designer, and there's even a logo for it printed on the wood! The head opens on a side, and a label inside reveals that the machine was manufactured in 1978. Although the small head makes this machine look like a toy or home model, this is a true pinball table under every aspect!

Componenti originali - Original parts
La grafica del piano e del mobile, le plastiche e il vetro sono di produzione originale. Nonostante non possa proprio dire che sia brutto, i disegni hanno una specie di aspetto "fatto in casa" che rivelano un origine un pò artigianale. Il piano è molto sporco ma in buono stato. I coperchi dei pop bumper mancano, quelli installati vengono da un "Fire Mountain" Zaccaria, ma come vedremo in seguito la loro assenza non dovrebbe costituire un problema...
Playfield and cabinet graphics, plastics and backglass are an original design. While I can't really say that it looks bad, it has a sort of "home-made" feel to it. The playfield is very dirty but looks in good shape. The bumper caps are missing (the ones you see come from a Zaccaria "Fire Mountain"!) but that should not constitute a problem (see below)..

Componenti Gottlieb - Gottlieb's parts
Tutti i componenti meccanici del piano, la gettoniera, il poggiamani, l'"apron", tutti i fili e i connettori usati per il cablaggio sono tipici componenti elettromeccanici Gottlieb anni 60-70. Evidentemente la B.E.M. decise per la strada più economica, ovvero quella di acquistare i componenti anzichè progettarne di originali.
All the mechanical parts of the playfield, the coin door, the lockbar, the apron, all wires and connectors are typical Gottlieb EM parts from the 60s-70s. Obviously B.E.M. chose the cheap way and decided to buy these parts instead of designing original ones.
